JUMMAH PRAYERS

AYATOLLAH ABUL QASIM AL KHOI

740. ….The following conditions must be fulfilled for Friday prayers becoming obligatory

(ii) The number of persons (including the imam) who intend offering Friday prayers should be at least seven. Hence, unless at least seven Muslims come together, offering of Friday prayers does not become obligatory. However, performance of Friday prayers by five persons including the Imam is in order.

(iii) The Imam should fulfil the necessary conditions for leading the prayers. These conditions include righteousness ('Adalat) and some other attributes which are required of an Imam and which will be mentioned in connection with the congregational prayers. Friday prayers does not become obligatory unless an Imam possessing necessary qualifications is available.

1462. The Imam of a congregational prayers should be Adult, Sane, an ithna 'Ashari Shia aadil, and Legitimate, and should offer the prayers correctly. Furthermore, if the follower is a man the Imam, too, should be a man. And there is no harm in a discerning child (i.e. a child who can distinguish between good and bad) following another discerning child, although it does not fulfil the conditions of a congregational prayer (i.e. it cannot be called a congregational prayers).

AYATOLLAH SYED ALI SISTAANI

740. * Friday prayers consists of 2 Rak'ats like Fajr prayers. The difference between these two prayers is that Namaz-e-Jumuah has two sermons before it. Namaz-e-Jumuah is Wajib Takhyiri, which means that we have an option to offer Jumuah prayers, if its necessary conditions are fulfilled, or to offer Zuhr prayers. Hence, if Namaz-e-Jumuah is offered then it is not necessary to offer Zuhr prayer.

The following conditions must be fulfilled for Jumuah prayers to become obligatory:

  • The time for Jumuah prayers should have set in. And that means that the midday time should have begun to decline. The time for Namaz-e-Jumuah is the earliest part of Zuhr. If it is very much delayed, then Namaz-e-Jumuah time will be over, and Zuhr Namaz will have to be prayed.
  • The number of persons joining Namaz-e-Jumuah should be at least five, including the Imam. If there are less than five people, Namaz-e-Jumuah would not become obligatory.
  • The Imam should fulfil the necessary conditions for leading the prayers. These conditions include righteousness ('Adalat) and other qualities which are required of an Imam and which will be mentioned in connection with the congregational prayers. In absence of an Imam qualifying to lead, Namaz-e-Jumuah will not be obligatory.

1462. * The Imam of the congregational prayers should be:

  • Adult (Baligh)
  • Sane
  • Ithna 'Ashari Shi'ah
  • 'Adil
  • Of legitimate birth
  • Being able to offer the prayers correctly

Furthermore, if the follower is a male, the Imam also should be a male. To follow a boy of ten years of age is a matter of Ishkal.

AYATOLLAH SYED MOHAMMED RAZA MOOSVI GULPAYEGANI

741. In the Presence of Imam AS it is obligatory on a person that he should pray the Jumuah Prayers on the day of Jumuah, instead of praying Zuhr. But at this time (when in the disappearance of Imam AS) if anybody prays Jumuah Prayers it is obligatory precaution on him to pray the Zuhr also.

 IMAM KHOMEINI

Page No. 486. At this time the Jumuah prayers are Obligatory Optional which means there is the option between the prayers of Jumuah and Zuhr, A person can pray one out of it. But Jumuah is better and Zuhr is Ahwat. It is more Ahwat to pray both Jumuah and Zuhr. The prayer of Zuhr will be void on the person who prays Jumuah Prayers. But it is Ahwat to perform Zuhr after the prayers of Jumuah and the prayers of Jumuah is two rakht the same way as the prayer of Fajr.

TRADITION OF THE INFALLIBLES AS

1.       Imam Ali AS said “No ruling on capital punishment will be correct and JumAA without the Just Imam”.

2.       It is narrated to Imam Ali AS that “the ruling on capital punishment and JumAA will not be correct without the Just Imam or the one who is appointed by Him.

3.       In the Book Jamaal al SabaAu Syed bin Tawoos and he by Sheik Talakbari and he by Zaid bin Sabit narrates by one Badwi Aeraabi person came to Prophet SW and said “O Messenger of Allah be my parents be scarified on you, we live in a village very far from Madina and we cannot come here for JumAA prayers. You teach us an act by which if we perform it we shall get the same excellence as of JumAA and when we go back to home show it to other people. Then Prophet SW said to him when the day shines you perform two rakht prayers wherein the first rakht after reading Surah Hamd read for 7 times Surah Qul Aauzo be Rabil Falak and in the second rakht after reading Surah Hamd read for 7 times Surah Qul Aauzo be Rabin Naas and 7 times Ayatal Kursi (till Khaledun) and after this perform another 8 rakht prayers in such a way that after two rakht when you sit in tashahud do not recite salam and instead recite salam after every 4 rakht and in every rakht after reading Surah Hamd read Surah Izajah Nasrullah one time and Surah Qul Huwal Allah 25 times. After you finish the tashahud and salam read this Dua for 7 times Ya Hayyo Ya Qayyum Ya Zuljalle wal Ikraam Ya ilahal awalleena wal aaqereena Ya Rahmanar Raheemad Dunya wal Aqerah wa Raheemahoma Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Rabbo Ya Allaho Ya Allaho Ya Allaho Ya Allaho Ya Allaho Ya Allaho Ya Allaho sale ala Mohammadiun wa Aalehi wagfirli. And then pray what you wanted and then recite this for 70 times. Lahoula Wala Quwata Illa Billa hil Aliyul Azeem and then recite Subhanal Allahil Rabil Arshil Kareem. Then the Prophet SW said By the Lord who is my creator whoever Male Momin or Female Mominaa prays this JumAA prayers on day of JumAA I will be responsible for Heaven for him and he will not stand up from his place of prayers that the evil deeds of his parents will be forgiven and the Allah will grant him virtues of all the persons who are praying on that day and all the virtues of the persons who has fasted on that day whether they be in east or west. These virtues will be in abundance which no eye has seen ever nor any ear have listened earlier.

Imam Jaffer Sadiq AS said “The first person on the day of JumAA who put forth the sermons over the prayers was Osman because when he used to complete the prayers the people does not stop to hear his sermon and disburses away and they use to say what will we do after listening his sermons when he himself does not abide what he preach and he has innovated a lot in the religion. Therefore when he saw this he has put forth the sermons over the prayers.” And I (Narrator) have asked my (teacher) Sheik Mohammad bin Hassan bin Waleed that what was that which was been recited by Aamma (Muslims) after the JumAA prayers? He replied it is been narrated that Bani Ummayya use to curse for thirty times on Imam Ali AS after the JumAA prayers but when Omar bin Abdul Aziz became the Ruler then he has ordered to stop that curses and said to recite LaIllaha Illahlah walAllaho Akbar after the JumAA prayers which is better.
